Casal Novo lies in a sheltered valley – a collection of modern and old xisto properties.
At the top of the village is the community wash-house, its bold modern 1970’s architectural style standing in contrast to its rustic location. Inside are eight wash-tubs, a poignant reminder of the time when the village’s inhabitants numbered significantly higher than they do today. A cobbled road leads down to the village, passing through the square, under which runs a network of irrigation pipes and channels.
Terraces extend below the village down to a stream where the old mill, still standing, once ground cereal grains. Towards the top of the village is the Casa de Povo, (community centre), a significant emblem of the pride that the present inhabitants have in their peaceful community.
