With any sculpture, the first tools to be used are the big hammer and chisel, to rough out the general shape or form before a more delicate touch brings the work of art to life. So it was with the forces that carved and formed this beautiful region: from the forces of continents colliding, which lifted the region out of the sea as the continental plate folded and buckled; to a procession of glacial and inter-glacial times, that carved and formed the valleys under an immense weight of ice.
This webpage hopes to describe this process, and to explain how the landscape was formed.
