Aigra Nova is a beautifully restored xisto village with narrow streets, cobbled in quartzite (the local grey stone). Despite having the name ‘Nova’ – meaning ‘new’ – the village probably goes back at least 1400 years and it is thought that the settlement is Moorish in origin. There are gold mines below the village, probably responsible for bringing the original settlers.
The recent construction of the community house uncovered several large circular granite stones, that are not natural to the area, and these stones show signs of heating and rapid cooling. It is likely that the stones date from the time of the Moors, and the location in proximity to the village’s water source suggests that these stones may have been used for heating bathing water.
The village has a shop selling regional products such as apple and chestnut marmalade and liquors, and handicrafts of the region.
