Casal dos Moinhos

Nestled at the bottom of the Sótão valley is the ‘lost’ hamlet of Casal dos Moinhos. Although it still bears a postcode and is listed as a village of the Góis region, the hamlet has been deserted for 20 years or so. A good track leads down from the N2 road just above Esporão, zig-zagging down the hillside that drops 250m to the river. The track passes through what were once cultivated terraces with a constructed irrigation system, but are now mostly taken over by eucalyptus trees. The handful of dwelling places that are clustered here are now overgrown with vegetation, and are so well blended back in with the landscape it is almost possible to walk past without seeing them. In the past, this hamlet would have been bustling with folk from Esporão bringing their maize down to the mill for grinding. There were bread ovens here, so the maize would have been ground and the bread baked in situ. An elderly woman from Esporão told us she used to do the steep walk of 2 km down and back twice a day, carrying the maize in a basket on her head, and back up again with the broa (corn-bread).
Today, it involves a scramble along the riverside to reach the old mill, that gives the hamlet its name -(‘Moinho’ meaning ‘mill’). The mill building itself is protected by a huge glacial boulder. Nearby there is a wonderful secluded swimming place, frequented occasionally in the summer by local people, but more often by the otters that enjoy the tumbling clear waters of the river Sótão.
