Casalinho de Cima

Casalinho de Cima is a small collection of old houses looking up the valley towards Góis. As you approach the village from Góis, you become aware of a group of colossal eucalyptus trees, nearly 1m in diameter. The eucalyptus were set over 40 years ago, when many of the eucalyptus plantations were established, but they have never been cut, allowing the trees to grow to maturity. (Today it is illegal to plant eucalyptus). A narrow lane leads upwards into the hamlet of Casalinho de Cima. The village is built from round quartzite boulders, originally deposited by the glaciers that carved out the region.
You can see the local technique of building using clay and small pieces of stone and terracotta to hold the round stones in place. From the font at the centre of the hamlet you can look down on the town of Góis, and the horizon is dominated by the dramatic peak of the Peneda de Góis.

Casalinho de Cima is literally translated as “little hamlet at the top” and the village of Casalinho de Baixo as “little hamlet at the bottom”. Below the village is the beautiful old Quinta de Capela, built in the 17th century for the Barreto Chichorro, one of the most important families of the time. It is now designated as a National Monument. In the grounds is one of the largest pine trees in Portugal.
