The road to Comareira winds steeply upwards. On the tight bend just before the village stands a group of the most magnificent gnarled chestnut tree-trunks, showing centuries of cutting for firewood and damage by wild fires. These are now in danger of being lost forever because of the encroaching eucalyptus forestry. 400m further on, you see the sign announcing the village of Comareira - a collection of newly renovated xisto houses. There are now only five inhabitants remaining, tending the terraces that extend down the steep slope. On a still day you can stand at the top of the village and listen to the woodpeckers drumming on trees in the valley below, or hear the goat bells high on the hill above the village, as Alfredo carries on the ancient job of tending his goats. |
