Esporão

Most people know the village of Esporão for the two café’s, garage and petrol station, as they drive through on the N2 road that runs between Góis and Pampilhosa da Serra. The modern buildings at the top of the hill give no sign of the beauty and charm of the old village of Esporão, that lies unseen further down the hill. The village was recorded in 1527 as having four permanent dwellings, and is likely to be much older. Amongst the narrow streets there is one house with granite stonework round the windows and doors, that is likely to date back to the medieval period, and may have been re-used from an earlier building. It was recounted by one of the oldest residents of Esporão that the building was known as the ‘Priest’s House’. This gentleman also told us that in the past, the villagers used to collect the chestnuts in the autumn and dry them on wooden laths high over the open fire. After this they put them into baskets and stamped them with their feet to separate the chestnuts from the peel. Then the dried chestnuts were stored in big wooden coffers (arcas), and could be eaten all through the year.

A tarmac road drops steeply down the hillside, where it stops in the Largo da Republica by the old chapel dedicated to São Miguel, that is used by the three villages, Ladeiras, Carvalhal Miúdo and Esporão. Below the square is an old cobbled road, with grass and wild flowers growing between the cobbles. The cobbled road narrows as it passes between the houses. Along this road is the old olive press of Esporão that once used a team of oxen to drive the crushing stones, rather than the traditional water wheel.
Many young cherry trees have recently been set along the road to the village, and there are several restoration projects being carried out in Esporão, as well as a museum in the village.
