It is a feature of this part of Portugal to see gaily coloured bunting hung around the local villages during the summer months – this is the sign that the village is celebrating its local saint in a 2-3 day “festa” or party. Each village, small or large, has its festa, at some time between late May and the end of September, and these are well publicised in advance with posters around Góis. A festa usually starts on a Friday and finishes on Sunday night, with live music and dancing starting after sundown on the Friday and Saturday, and a feast of sardines on the Sunday. There is also an important religious element to the festa, as the patron saint is honoured, often with a procession, and always with a service. Visitors from outside the village are very welcome to attend these occasions, which are lively and celebratory affairs, and a highlight of the local calendar.
