The little hamlet of Picarotos is situated on the side of the Sótão valley, approximately 1.5 km from Vila Nova do Ceira. The houses in the village, although concealed by render, are built from round quartzite boulders, transported here by the glacier that once filled the valley.
Above the village there is an area of glacial scree made of the same material. There are many grapevines that clamber over the stone walls around the village. Just below the village is one of the most important levadas in the area, the Levada de Cima, that supplies irrigation water over 3km to the fields around Vila Nova do Ceira and the villages along its route. Below the village the terraced fields stretch down to the broad fertile valley.
