Sacões de Cima

Sacões de Cima is a collection of houses along a narrow lane that leads up from Sacões de Baixo. It takes advantage of a piece of gently sloping land on a more steeply sloping hillside. 200m below the village is the river Sótão. Around the village there is evidence that this was once the course of a glacier – not only the round boulders, that are used for walls in the houses, but also great boulder screes on the other side of the valley, left by the glacier.
A blind man from Sacões, known as the ‘Cego de Sacões’, was famous in this and the neighbouring villages for playing music after the peeling of the maize, and during the festas. His name was António Carvalho Júnior. He had a big house and people from all around used to gather in his living room to dance to his tunes. His son kindly gave us a picture of Sr. António Carvalho Júnior which we have reproduced here, since he is such a well-remembered personality in the local villages, and obviously gave such pleasure with his music.
