Ribeiro de Além takes its name from the Ribeira de Álem, the stream that runs down through the valley. Above and below the settlement, almost the entire course of the valley has been terraced, originally to grow maize. Although most of the houses in the valley have been abandoned, there is a group of restored xisto buildings below the track that runs to Quinta das Águias, in the next valley. The terraces around the settlement are still cultivated and the high terrace walls maintained. Historically, as well as maize cultivation, the inhabitants of the area would gather chestnuts in the autumn as an important food source, and keep sheep and goats that grazed the hillside. |
