The abandoned village of Roçaio is situated on the side of the Ceira valley, looking down towards Colmeal. A collection of twenty or so ruins stand where once there was a thriving village, with olive and fruit trees and terraces of maize. The old road that runs through the village can still be followed, although barely a metre wide and overgrown. Through one of the ruins an old rose climbs – the last echo of gardens that were once round the houses. The last inhabitant left the village some 20 years ago, and the new road to Carvalhal passed the village by.
