FISCAL NUMBER - Número de Identificação Fiscal or Número de Contribuinte – NIF
• Obtaining your fiscal number is your first step in making any formal financial transaction in Portugal. You will be asked for this number to open a bank account, to buy property, to take up residency, to buy a vehicle and many other things besides - including paying your income tax (IRS).

• You are given a fiscal number when you register with the tax authorities, in person, at the local tax office (Repartição de Finanças). You will need to present your passport (as proof of identity) and an address in Portugal to which the card can be sent - this can be the address of a friend, solicitor or estate agent if you do not yet have your own private address. A small charge will be made for the registration.


• You should inform the tax authorities of any subsequent change of address (such as when you move into your own property).
